From the very first time you contact the SDF team, our entire range of services are designed to help instil the skills and experience needed to become the safest driver possible.
Therefore the increasing number of drivers being caught using their mobile phones whilst driving is not something that we can condone in any way.
Breaking The Law
THINK! (the Department of Transport’s dedicated road safety website) highlights the following:
Using a mobile phone, sat nav or any similar device whilst driving means that the driver’s attention is distracted from the road.
- Studies show that drivers using a hands-free or handheld mobile phone are slower at recognising and reacting to hazards.
- Even careful drivers can be distracted by a call or text – and a split-second lapse in concentration could result in a crash.
Highlighting the Seriousness
The police are working hard to stamp this out this illegal and dangerous practice and a senior officer has offered the following method of highlighting just how serious this indiscretion should be viewed.
Drivers caught twice on phone should face a ban, police urge
Suzette Davenport, who speaks on roads policing for the Association of Chief Police Officers, says that the Government is failing to crack down on motorists because of the looming election
“Motorists who are caught for a second time using a mobile phone at the wheel should be banned from the roads, says a leading police officer.
Suzette Davenport, Chief Constable of Gloucestershire, accused the Government of failing to get tough with offenders because it might be a vote-loser.
Miss Davenport, who speaks on roads policing for the Association of Chief Police Officers, said: “My view is that if someone is caught twice using a mobile phone within a period of time we should be considering things like disqualifications for short periods of time.”
